The regal Siberian cat breed is a glamorous native feline from the forested area of northern Russia with a subarctic climate that no doubt contributed to this cat's long, thick, protective coat.
The Siberian cat is highly affectionate with family and playful when they want to be. These cats will follow you all over and gladly participate in whatever you're doing, rivaling even the dog in its loyalty. They are also highly intelligent and very trainable--meeting you at the door when you come home, learning to come when their name is called, play fetch and more. Siberians are quiet--just an occasional soft 'mew' to get your attention.
Hypoallergenic: There is a lot of confusion as to what hypoallergenic means. It does not mean that something is "allergy free". Hypo means, under or less. Thus hypoallergenic means less allergy causing.
It has become a fact that Siberian cats, generally produce less of the Fel-D1 Protein in their saliva which is what activates most peoples' allergies. Cats groom themselves and the saliva dries on their fur and skin, flakes off and travels all over the room. It is not possible to have a totally allergy free cat but it is very possible to obtain a hypoallergenic Siberian cat. For many allergy sufferers this means that they can finally have a cat in their life.
If you have allergies and are searching for a cat it is important that you realize that even a hypoallergenic cat can require special care in order to prevent your allergies from becoming worse. Bathing your Siberian cat monthly will reduce allergens. Vacuum often to limit hair build up around the house. Feeding a well balanced natural food diet, so they maintain a healthy coat to reduce shedding. The last thing, but extremely important for allergy sufferers, is to create an allergy free safe haven for sleeping. This means that you cannot allow your pets to sleep in your bedroom.
Appearance: Siberians are one of the most handsome breeds of cat with rounded features, sweet faced with a compact body consisting of strong back legs and big feet that have tufts of fur that wrap their paws in warmth. Delicate wisps of fur in their ears with fur points at the top and a huge ruff make them look very regal, complete with a beautiful long full tail.
Ease Care: Less shedding, due to a triple coat of fur, they "molt" in the spring and then do minimal shedding the rest of the year. The triple coat of fur--a soft under coat, a top coat that is less dense but waterproof and long guide hairs that keep the coat almost maintenance free--makes them look bigger than they actually are and provides the perfect defense against a winter chill.
